Herbert Wendler, a chocolatier from Dresden first invented the recipe in 1936. His intentions was to reach a wider range of customers since this layered chocolate was easier and cheaper to produces and thus interesting for customers with less disposable income.

During the food shortage of the second world war the Dominosteine became popular as ‘Notpraliene’, which means as much as penury chocolate in English. Nowadays, Dominosteine are popular as Christmas confectionary.

Dominosteine are made out of three layers of candy glazed with chocolate. Usually these layers are gingerbread, jelly and marzipan.
